Outdoor Adventures

Heidelberg is surrounded by countryside waiting to be explored. Enjoy a hike on the scenic trails by the Neckar river, or take a mountain bike and venture into the Odenwald region for a more vigorous excursion. Looking for something a little more relaxing? Climb aboard a boat and take in the city’s picturesque landscapes and historic architecture from the water. Or take a short drive to the east and visit a series of historic castles: Dilsberg Castle in Neckargemünd, and the four notorious castles of Neckarsteinach. A little further afield lies the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Mainz, Worms, and Speyer, renowned for its influence on Ashkenazi Judaism. If the architectural highlights and charming villages of the Upper Rhine Valley are not for you, perhaps a round of golf at the highly rated courses in Lobenfeld or St. Leon will appeal.

Heidelberger Frühling is a music festival that takes place across the city in March & April each year. Venues large and small host classical music performances from individuals and ensembles, featuring internationally recognized artists and up & coming musicians. Celebrate the arrival of Spring with a live musical performance, some traditional local cuisine, and a browse through local craft stalls.

Castle Illuminations

Twice each year, in June and September, Heidelberg Castle is illuminated with spectacular fireworks in memory of its destruction in the Palatinate War of Succession. Spectators line the river banks and city streets to view this remarkable sight set against the night sky.

Heidelberger Herbst
