Portrait Dr. Markus Heckmann
Markus Heckmann, MD

Dr. Heckmann is a specialist in internal medicine and cardiology. He completed his studies in medicine at the University of Heidelberg in 2014. He then completed his specialist training in the Department of Cardiology, Angiology and Pneumology at Heidelberg University Hospital. In his dissertation, he developed a new gene therapy approach for the treatment of a genetic heart muscle disease and graduated summa cum laude. In addition to working for several years in the cardiology and gastroenterology/infectiology intensive care units at the University Hospital, he provided clinical care for patients after heart transplantation for many years and was an integral part of the special outpatient clinics for cardiomyopathies and heart failure. He was involved in setting up the first cardio-oncology outpatient clinic in Germany and has published numerous research papers in this field. Dr. Heckmann is proficient in German, French, English, and Spanish, enabling him to communicate effectively with a diverse patient population. He is an active member of several professional societies, including the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Kardiologie (DGK) and the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). Dr. Heckmann’s extensive training and research background, coupled with his dedication to patient care, ensure that his patients receive the highest standard of treatment. His involvement in both clinical practice and academic teaching at Heidelberg University Hospital reflects his commitment to advancing the field of cardiology through education and innovative research. He has been a private lecturer in internal medicine at the Heidelberg Medical Faculty since 2023. In addition to his own teaching activities, he is involved in the development of the teaching and training curriculum in the Department of Cardiology, Angiology, and Pneumology at Heidelberg University Hospital and will continue to be active in research and teaching.

Frank Heckmann, MD

Dr. Frank Heckmann is an esteemed specialist in internal medicine, angiology, and phlebology. He completed his medical studies at the University of Heidelberg in 1985. Following his studies, he trained as a specialist in internal medicine at Mannheim University Hospital and has been practicing as an internist since 1992. He established his private practice the same year and has been serving patients with dedication ever since. In 1995, Dr. Heckmann further specialized in angiology and phlebology, and since 1996, he has been a pivotal part of the team at the ATOS Praxisklinik. Dr. Heckmann holds additional qualifications, including the authorization to train other doctors in angiology, phlebology, and internal medicine since 1999. His commitment to medical education is further demonstrated through his leadership role at the Academy for Medical Continuing Education (ESPM), where he has been serving as director since 2003. Additionally, Dr. Heckmann has served as vice-president of the European Society of Preventive Medicine (ESPM) since 2003 and has been a board member of the Association of Interdisciplinary Vascular Medicine in Southern Germany since 2015. In recognition of his significant contributions to preventive medicine, Dr. Heckmann was awarded the "Mérite Européen" in 2010. He is proficient in German, English, and Spanish, enabling him to effectively communicate with a diverse patient population. Dr. Heckmann is an active member of several professional societies, including the Bund Deutscher Internisten (BDI), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ultraschall in der Medizin (DEGUM), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Angiologie (DGA), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Phlebologie (DGP), the European Society of Preventive Medicine (ESPM), and the Association of Interdisciplinary Vascular Medicine in Southern Germany (VIGS). Portrait Dr. Uwe Zwettler
Uwe Zwettler, MD

Dr. Zwettler specializes in internal medicine and vascular diseases. He began his medical career at the University of Heidelberg, where he studied medicine from 1982 to 1989 and received his doctorate in 1995. His clinical career has taken him through various stations, starting with the Nephrology Section at the Heidelberg University Medical Center and continuing at the SRH Karlsbad-Langensteinbach Clinic, where he was co-head of the clinic as senior consultant. Since 2014, Dr. Zwettler has been working at the Center for Preventive Medicine at the Atos Clinic in Heidelberg. As a member of several medical societies, and through his position at our center, he combines clinical knowledge with innovative treatment methods. Dr. Zwettler's path is characterized by a deep passion for patient care, which has been instrumental in the development of new therapeutic approaches. Dr. Zwettler's work recognizes the importance of accurate diagnosis and individualized treatment plans to improve patient care outcomes.

Matthias Müller-Hennessen, MD

Professor Müller-Hennessen is board certified in internal medicine and cardiology. He undertook his medical studies at Saarland University from 2004 to 2010, with study visits to New York, Basel, and San Diego. He then completed further training at Heidelberg University Hospital in the Department of Cardiology, Angiology and Pneumology in 2011. He has been a specialist in internal medicine and cardiology since 2018 and was a senior physician at the Eberbach site from 2018 to 2020 and a senior consultant in the coronary care unit at Heidelberg University Hospital from 2021 to 2023. Professor Müller-Hennessen has been a member of the team at the Center for Vascular Diseases and Preventive Medicine at the ATOS Clinic in Heidelberg and Neckargemünd since 2023. He has extensive experience in direct patient care, with a focus on clinical and interventional cardiology, from diagnostics to the performance of coronary interventions. Additionally, he has many years of experience in acute internal medicine, intensive care, and emergency medicine. In addition to his clinical experience, Professor Müller-Hennessen has also conducted extensive scientific research on the clinical use of cardiovascular biomarkers. His findings have been published in numerous high-ranking journals in the field of cardiovascular medicine and have influenced guideline recommendations. In 2020, he successfully completed his habilitation with a teaching license for internal medicine and cardiology at Heidelberg University and was appointed adjunct professor in 2023. His broad spectrum in the clinical and scientific field enables Professor Müller-Hennessen to provide his patients with the best possible assessment of individual treatment options and successes. In alignment with the Heidelberg School of Cardiology's guiding principle, he believes that, despite the advancements in cardiovascular medicine, the focus should remain on the individual as a whole.

Falko Frese, MD

Dr. Falko Frese is board certified in internal medicine and sports medicine. He undertook medical studies at the University of Heidelberg from 1996 to 2003, and successfully completed a doctorate in the field of sports medicine in 2004 with a thesis on "Individual Fitness for Altitude Training." As part of his further training as a specialist in internal medicine, which he successfully completed in 2013, Dr. Frese worked at Heidelberg University Hospital and the GRN Clinic in Weinheim. He also holds additional qualifications in sports medicine and emergency medicine. From 2013 to 2018, he served as a senior physician in the Department of Internal Medicine VII: Sports Medicine at Heidelberg University Hospital, where he provided care to elite athletes at the Rhine-Neckar Olympic Training Center. As an experienced internist and sports physician, Dr. Frese offers a wide range of services, from classic health examinations to complex sports medicine performance analyses and targeted training optimization. He specializes in the integration of sport and exercise for internal diseases such as cardiovascular diseases and cancer. His many years of experience in the fields of internal medicine and sports medicine enable him to utilize both areas equally in the interests and for the benefit of his patients and athletes. Dr. Frese is well-versed in the intricacies of elite sport in Germany, having spent many years immersed in the field of university sports medicine. He has been an official physician for the German Swimming Association since 2013, having previously cared for the national and junior national teams at numerous international competitions, including world and European championships. He is also the team doctor for the MLP Academics Heidelberg (1st German Basketball League) and the Kurpfalz Bären Ketsch (2nd German Women's Handball League). Dr. Frese channels this experience working with competitive athletes into his consultations with, and treatment of, patients at our center. A former swimmer and volleyball player, Dr. Frese discovered his passion for running in 2008 and has been an avid runner, cyclist, and triathlete ever since.

Martin Rieger, MD

Dr. Martin Rieger is a highly skilled specialist in internal medicine and angiology. He undertook his medical studies from 1988 to 1995 at the universities of Heidelberg and Berlin. In 1996, he earned his doctorate in Berlin under the supervision of Professor Hermann Haller. Dr. Rieger's clinical career began with specialist training in internal medicine at the University Hospital of Greifswald and the Diakonie Hospital Mannheim (1995 - 2003). Since 2003, he has been an integral part of the Practice for Vascular Diseases and Preventive Medicine. In 2005, he further specialized in angiology, focusing on the comprehensive treatment and management of vascular diseases. Dr. Rieger is an active member of several professional societies, including the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Innere Medizin (DGIM) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Angiologie (DGA), reflecting his commitment to staying at the forefront of advancements in internal medicine and angiology.  He is proficient in German, English, and French, allowing him to effectively serve a diverse patient population. Darius Sadeghian, MD
Vascular surgery, phlebology
Dr. Darius Sadeghian is a highly regarded specialist in vascular surgery and phlebology. He undertook his medical studies at the University of Heidelberg from 1987 to 1993. In 1996, he earned his doctorate at the Foundation Orthopedic Clinic of the University of Heidelberg with a dissertation on the long-term outcomes of acromioclavicular joint dislocation under the supervision of Prof. Markus Loew. Dr. Sadeghian's clinical career began in 1993, and he served as an intern, assistant, and later as a senior physician at the ATOS Clinic Heidelberg in the department led by Dr. Friedl and Dr. Rappold until 2005. He then specialized in vascular surgery at TKH Mannheim under PD Dr. Hofmeister, with additional phlebological training by senior physician S. Kennel from 2005 to 2007. His experience broadened in visceral and trauma surgery, as well as in emergency and intensive care medicine at Vincentius Speyer from 2007 to 2010. From 2010 to 2015, he worked in vascular surgery at Diako Speyer under Prof. G. Rümenapf. In 2016, he joined the vascular surgery team at Joho Wiesbaden with Dr. Uckmann and served as a senior physician for vascular surgery at Fürst Stirum Bruchsal until October 2017. Dr. Sadeghian offers individualized consultations for vascular diseases, coordinating advanced diagnostics and discussing the necessity of surgical interventions. His comprehensive range of services includes vascular check-ups, embolism and thrombosis prevention and treatment, and the management of primary or recurrent varicose veins. He also offers ulcer therapy, lymphology, and cosmetic consultations, and collaborates with his team at the vascular center to address complex arteriovenous conditions. Dr. Sadeghian is an active member of several professional societies, including the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Gefäßchirurgie (DGG), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Phlebologie (DGP), and the Berufsverband der Phlebologen (BVP). He holds additional qualifications in phlebology, emergency medicine, radiation protection, and laser treatment, ensuring his approach to patient care is both comprehensive and current. Dr. Sadeghian’s extensive training and diverse clinical experience enable him to deliver high-quality, individualized care in vascular surgery and phlebology, emphasizing both medical excellence and patient well-being.
